Relationship to DBMS
Differentiate between database management system and information retrieval system by focusing on their functionalities. There are many functions of database management system and information retrieval system. But, there are differences when focusing on their functionalities.
Database management system is a software package that allows data to be effectively stored, retrieved and manipulated, and the data stored in a DBMS package can be accessed by multiple users and by multiple application programs like(Oracle) .For an information retrieval system, according to Harter, it is a device interposed between a potential user of information and information collection itself that given information problem.
A database management system (DBMS) basically a collection of programmes that enables users to store, modify and extract information from a database according to their requirements. DBMS is a connection between programmes and the data. Programs access the DBMS, which then access data. There are different types of DBMS from the sequence of small system that run on personal computers to huge systems that run on mainframes. A database management system (DBMS) consists of several components. Each component plays an important roles in the database management system.
The major components of database management system are
- Use the particular DBMS’s facility or application.
- Start and stop the DBMS.
- Make a backup of the database.
- Handle hardware or software failure.
An Information Retrieval System also consists of concepts and components of IRS.The concept of Information Retrieval System or IRS is there are some documents or records containing information that have been organized. The information is quite different from other kinds of information or data.Besides, an information retrieval system has three major components :
• The document subsystem
• The users subsystem
• The searching /retrieval subsystem
Basically, an IRS are the documents or sources of information and another one is the user’s queries. These two sides are connected through a series task. The list following shown six major subsystems :
- The documents subsystem
- The indexing system
- The vocabulary subsystem
- The searching subsystem
- The ser system interface
- The matching subsystem
